The separated sewer system in the City of Lancaster consists of independent sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines. Sanitary sewer lines deliver domestic and industrial sewage directly to the City’s wastewater treatment Plant. During rain vents, the storm sewer system collects stormwater and delivers it to the Conestoga River and/or little Conestoga Creek. The area served by the separated sewer system is regulated by a national pollution discharge elimination system permit for stormwater discharges from the small municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4). Under these regulations, the City currently implements a program designed to reduce MS4 pollutants, with the goal of protecting water quality. The following two documents, When It Rains It Drains Brochure and Protecting Water Quality from Urban Runoff, provide more information on protecting water quality from stormwater runoff.
