North Queen Street: Stop #15
North Queen Street is one of Lancaster's oldest commercial blocks. Because ground floor storefronts are often altered as new businesses take over and merchandising strategies change, you'll see the most intact original details on the upper floors of commercial buildings. So be sure to step back and look up!
Eichholtz Building 43-45 North Queen Street
This 1925 building was constructed of "Straub blocks," a type of cement building material developed in Lancaster. The façade has a streamlined look that reflects tastes in the Roaring '20s. The first tenant in this building was the Ross Store, Lancaster's first chain department store. (A Victorian building on this site was demolished in 1925 to make room for this building. The earlier building had been sold in 1897 to the grandson of painter Jacob Eichholtz, whose own house was Stop #10 along South Lime Street.)
