Penn Square: Stop #1
Lancaster Cultural History Museum 13 West King Street

The three-and-one-half-story brick building, which now houses a museum (formerly the Heritage Center Museum) is one of Lancaster's most important Georgian structures. Commissioned in 1795 as a "public office house," the building has a long history in government service. Originally built as Lancaster County's Public Offices, it housed state offices from 1799 until 1812, and later served as Lancaster's City Hall from 1854 until 1930. It has also been used as a Masonic lodge meeting hall, a post office and a library. It is the oldest building on Penn Square.
