Recycling at Outdoor & Special Event
Recycling at outdoor and special events can be difficult. Unless your program is clear and simple, participants will not understand the system and will either not recycle or do such a poor job that materials become unusable. The critical issue for recycling at outdoor and special events is to make your system fool-proof. Even then, expect some not to follow the rules.
All outdoor and special events must source separate the following materials:
- High grade office paper
- Corrugated cardboard
- Glass containers
- Aluminum and Steel cans
- Plastic bottles
Steps for Successful Recycling at Outdoor & Special Events:
- Designate a Recycling Coordinator for the event
- Have enough staff or volunteers to comply with your plan
- Determine the amount and type of waste that is likely to be generated at your event, place designated containers in clusters near your trash bins throughout the event area and label them clearly
- Choose containers with lids or openings that emphasize your program
- Discuss your plan with the company responsible for picking up waste at your event
- Also include recycling information in your event literature
The City has Clear Stream Recyclers, shown below, for any special event. Please contact the Bureau of Solid Waste and Recycling at (717)-291-4744 to arrange placement at your special event.
