The Historic City of Lancaster:A Report on its Historic Resources
First published in 1995, this 142-page report is again available for purchase from the City of Lancaster.
Edited by David B. Schneider, the former executive director of The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, the report draws on historical research and fieldwork undertaken by the Trust between 1978 and 1981 as part of the first Comprehensive Historic Sites Survey of the City, the results of which were published in the 1985 report, Our Present Past, which is now out-of-print. Portions of The Historic City of Lancaster first appeared in the Trust's 1992 publication, Preserving Community Character, a historic preservation plan developed to support the City of Lancaster's Comprehensive Plan. Much of the text of the earlier publications was expanded, and supplemented by additional field survey work and research, to create the 1995 report.
The 1995 publication of The Historic City of Lancaster was funded with Federal funds through a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Bureau for Historic Preservation.
The Historic City of Lancaster explores architectural styles, building types, and landmark structures that can be seen today throughout Lancaster's remarkably intact historic neighborhoods. The publication is illustrated with historic photos and maps, as well as contemporary black-and-white photographs of the City. The report divides Lancaster into fifteen historic neighborhoods in order to describe the growth and character of each area, while highlighting significant buildings within each neighborhood.
The Historic City of Lancaster is available for purchase at City Hall, 120 North Duke Street, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Individual copies cost $8.00.
