Art Deco Style (1925-1945)

Less an architectural style than a decorative style, many Art Deco buildings are new façades added to older buildings. Rarely seen in houses in this area, the style was most frequently used for movie theaters, office buildings and, most common in Lancaster, stores. Characteristics include:

  • Hard-edged geometrical designs and low-relief ornamentation (such as parallel lines, sharp angles, and zigzags)
  • linear, streamlined look with flat roofs
  • use of colored glass or enameled metal panels
  • entrances embellished with stylized light fixtures and hardware
