At a time when obesity and diabetes are on the rise among children, it is imperative to understand and implement environmental change and healthy community design. To achieve this, we as parents need to define our roles and establish healthy habits that last a lifetime and incorporate them into our daily living. As community leaders, this allows us to establish priorities to implement sustainable change, to spur action and to choose strategies that make sense for our community. Here in the City of Lancaster, we have identified and initiated steps to create a healthier community through Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Cities and Towns. As we move forward we ask you as parents to model healthy decisions about physical activity and nutrition. Throughout the next few months, we will be working on the implementation of programs which will impact systemic change in our city. You will be hearing more about children’s health and built environments and how healthy community design enhances the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
