Congratulations to Sue Mackey of the 200 block of North Mulberry Street, who was named Neighbor of the Month for December!
Sue, a former School District of Lancaster teacher, moved to Lancaster from Peeskill, New York in August 1974. After over 45 years in Lancaster, she considers herself a true Lancastrian! She and her husband of 28 years, Tim, bought their home on North Mulberry Street 8 years ago and have enjoyed the neighborhood ever since!
The neighbor that nominated Sue noted that she is the, “driving force behind the block,” by planning events throughout the year, including block parties and neighborhood cleanups. Sue even cooks chili on Halloween night for neighbors to enjoy while passing out candy to trick-or-treaters! Sue also created a block email list, and goes out of her way to make sure new neighbors are added when they move in to ensure they’re informed of what’s happening on the block. They went on to say, “Thanks to Sue, we have become not just neighbors, but friends that support one another. Our block is only as special as it is because of Sue's friendship, leadership, and her passion for the Lancaster community.”
Sue is involved with St. James Episcopal Church, the People’s Shakespeare Project, and LancasterHistory.Org, is a block captain with the Lancaster City Alliance, and a committee person for the Lancaster City Democratic Committee. Outside of her community involvement, she enjoys spending time with family and partaking in the many cultural activities, restaurants, musical events, quiet parks, great biking, walking, and shopping that Lancaster City has to offer!
As for her favorite restaurant, Sue said, “I could never name just one. We enjoy Carr’s Wine Bar, Checkers (try the scallops), the Belvedere and Luca. There is so much diversity in our culinary choices. It’s hard to beat Lancaster! How lucky are we to live here?” While Sue might feel lucky to have Lancaster, Lancaster sure feels lucky to have Sue and other neighbors like her. Thank you, Sue!
